June In My Kitchen

Until September the IMK community is in recess, but June was a busy month in my kitchen.

new pots

In My Kitchen is a brand new set of Scanpan saucepans, part of a bonus gift from Ilve that accompanied my wonderful new cooker. I’ve sent my older pots off to the op shop. New kitchen, new cooker and new pots, I feel spoilt.

In My Kitchen is new timber bread storage bin. I’ve been struggling to find the best solution for storing my homebred sourdough loaves. Putting a freshly baked loaf in the fridge makes the crusts soft and solidifies the loaf while keeping bread at room temperature sealed in a plastic container encourages mould. We bought this box hoping it would provide the optimum storage environment and make our enjoyment of each loaf endure. So far so good, but we have doubts that it will be as effective in summer with high temperatures and humidity. I’ll let you know.

In My Kitchen is some beautiful cold pressed avocado oil from the Sunshine Coast. I buy avos from the grower each week so I needed no persuasion to try his oil. It’s buttery flavour makes a delicious salad dressing.

In My Kitchen are some finds from my local op shop. The lidded glass cookie jar was a bargain. It fits perfectly on the shelf above the coffee machine, but it constantly need refilling….

I’ve had three Tupperware strainers in my kitchen for 30ish years. They are in constant use. Imagine my delight when I found their big brother in the op shop for $2. There was no way I was leaving it behind.

In My Kitchen is a bottle of Pol Roger NV, a gift from winemaker Charles Melton for helping pour his luscious red wines at a recent museum release wine tasting we attended in Brisbane. It was tough spending a Sunday morning tasting 10 year old Barossa reds from our favourite winery.
Thanks Charlie, but really, I needed no inducement to help.

Finally, except for paint, my brand new kitchen is complete. I love it!

About ladyredspecs

I live in sunny Brisbane, Australia. My love of good food drives me as a cook, a reader, a traveller, an artist and but mostly as an eater. I cooked professionally for many years but have no formal training. Simply guided by a love of eating good food, respect for ingredients and an abhorrence of artificial additives, I cook instinctively applying the technical know how acquired by experience. I hope you enjoy what I share Sandra AKA ladyredspecs

  1. Your kitchen is absolutely, magazine quality, gorgeous!!! What a joy it must be to cook in it, finally. The champagne is totally appropriate. I miss IMK and am so glad you wrote a post.

Your kitchen is just amazing Sandra, you must love cooking delicious goodies in that beauty! I have been looking at Ilve for when one day we have our own kitchen and after seeing yours I want one, I want one, I want one! 😉 It’s hard to find a good bread storage system, looking forward to seeing how this goes x

Of course you love your new kitchen. It’s fantastic, Sandra! This was a great IMK post, too. You will love your new bread bin. They really do extend the shelf-life of your loaves — and yours will look fine sitting atop your new counter tops. 🙂

I love your new kitchen, what a pleasant place to spend time and cook. I’ve been struggling with bread storage as well. Right now we are in the midst of a very hot and humid summer and plastic bags work best for us.m the boys eat it fast enough that we don’t get mould.

Absolutely love the look of your kitchen: the waiting for it was more than worthwhile methinks! And thank you for mentioning Scanpan: our ‘Victoria’s Basement’ has had some marvellous prices on the range and my eyes have wandered over more than once! Am certain you enjoyed your Pol Roger: I got ‘fixated’ on ‘Krug’ v early in the piece so friends know what to hand over with a smile!!

Thanks Eha, yes the kitchen is well worth the wait. It was like Christmas receiving 2 big boxes of brand new kitchen equipment from Ilve. The saucepans are great, I’m very happy indeed. I have a penchant for French bubbles, Pol on my fave NV, but Krug is No 2.

The bread would go stale from lack of attention if there were three screens, he’d forget to eat 🙂

Your kitchen is quite lovely, Sandra, it must be a thrill each time you walk into it. When I was growing up in England my parents had a terracotta bread crock as well as a terracotta butter cooler and a milk cooler- terracotta breathes and it may well be ideal for storing bread in Queensland, but I haven’t seen one for years.

Thanks Jan. I tried to find a ceramic bread crock, but they’re out of fashion, timber was the best I could do. Time will tell….

So lovely to see your completed kitchen. It is beautiful & functional. I love Scanpan… the G.O. bought us a couple of roasting pans that are the best ever. I’ve been popping into op shops as we travel but no stunning bargains yet… but I live in hope 😊

When my parents lived in Equatorial Africa for 10 years, they always kept bread in a large unglazed terracotta canister with a lid. It didn’t go mouldy or stale despite the humidity and heat. Something to test in Brisbane, perhaps?

I had a ceramic bread crock years ago, it had been a wedding present, and was wonderful. The timber was the best we could do, it seems ceramic is of favour. Summer will be the test…

  18. Sandra, those lovely tiles in your kitchen – they take my breath away. Love them! And so much storage space. I am a fan of Scanpan and have a number of their pots and pans – usually purchased when they are on sale, but so worth it. I hope you enjoy yours. Also, wooden bread bins work for me…
